Langley CVT Maintenance & Repairs: Understanding CVT Technology

Although CVT technology first gained notoriety in 1910, when Zenit motorcycles built a CVT, which was so efficient it got banned from hill-climbing competitions; it has since made its way within mainstream vehicle models. And A&B Transmissions offers Langley CVT Maintenance & Repairs to help our local community manage their vehicle in an affordable way!

Understanding CVT Technology

CVT stands for continuously variable transmission, which can change seamlessly through a continuous range of gears. Overall, there are 3 different types of transmissions: manual, automatic and CVT – also considered a type of automatic transmission.

As mentioned on our Langley CVT Transmission Maintenance & Repairs page

Where conventional transmissions have multiple gears and change automatically or via manual manipulation; the CVT is really quite different as it has no gears to speak of at all. Instead, it has a series of pulleys, and usually uses a type of metal belt to control the shifting. The vehicle computer is always adjusting the pulley sizing, which is based on road speed and how much throttle input you are applying. This continual adjusting of transmission pulley size is done seamlessly to keep the engine in its best operating range, both for fuel economy as well as power.

Some Popular Brands Known for CVT’s Include:

  • Toyota Corolla
  • Honda Civic
  • Honda Fit

Mitsubishi, Nissan and Subaru also are heavily invested in their lineup of vehicles offering CVT.

Because this was a re-emerging technology not so long ago, many consumers avoided CVT  vehicles. However, they have since become highly popular – and growing, with fuel-efficiency being a draw for those seeking to save money at the pumps and lessen their impact on the environment.
